Hohner Travel banjo tuner help

Hi, I'm looking for some advice regarding my Hohner travel banjo.  The size is great and I like the sound, it works awesome as a travel banjo.  However, I really dislike the tuners.  Searching the forum I saw that some of you have upgraded your tuners, could anyone recommend a make/model of tuners to buy that would be an improvement to what I have?

Thank you!

Blue Hawaii - Vocal, Banjo, Ukulele

Someone asked me to play a gig for their son who was getting married in Hawaii (no I don't get to go to Hawaii), but they are having a party state-side before the wedding. I started putting some backing tracks together, and really like the sound of the Banjo and Uke together. Grab a Mai Tai and I hope you enjoy...

Paolo ask me what I thought of the interesting group that he performs with. (the one he posted just a while ago. I thought it was a very interesting group. It made me think of a group I had a few years back with the talented Cynthia Sayer and some other multi-instrumentalists. Here we are with our banjos. Me and my tenor and Cynthia and her plectrum.

I stumbled across this today. The first paragraph or two helped to voice for me what I find exciting about bluegrass jamming. The rest of it provides some good information on bluegrass playing or jamming in general.

Playing banjo in musical 'Chicago'- Boone, NC area

I've been rehearsing for the banjo part in the musical 'Chicago' the last few days.  It's really meant for a tenor banjo so it's been a challenge but fun.  The show runs this coming Monday, July 1st, and ends Sunday July 7th.  We take the 2nd and 4th off.  If you're in the Boone/surrounding area come on out!  Show times/ticket info can be found here.

Sugar Hill Chords

I've been practicing Sugar Hill diligently for weeks now.  It's been a great tune for me to apply the drop-thumb tips given here recently in another thread.  I think I've made some serious breakthroughs, and I thank all those who gave encouragement and advice.

So, now I'm playing along with the tracks on Old Time Jam.  I'm getting there,  BUT, the version used on OTJ has a G for the IV chord.  It just appears once in both the A and B parts.  But, I'm sure the notes I've learned to play in the melody make up Bm (I think).  I can hear something wrong there.  Every tab version I can find with the chords shown, show that G, but the melody seems to be pretty much the same as mine.

I can easily change my melody version to use the major (moving one finger from the second fret, first string, to the third fret.)  It sounds different, but not bad.  I could get used to it.  I live out in the sticks, and won't likely be playing with many other people, but I would like to know what other folks do here.

If it matters, I learned my version of SH from David Holt's video.

Old pot, which neck?

I just bought this pot with all hardware intact. I recognized the square shield shoes as early (not sure How early) and want to build a period neck for it. Can anyone help with period and style I should pursue? My first impulse is simple paddle head and round heel (the imprint on the pot is clear) but I could go a little more idiosyncratic.

Lester Pate (1944 - 2003)

I just picked up a cassette of Lester Pate & Ralph StanleyKeep My Love With You. Ralph is on clawhammer on a couple of tunes, but otherwise Lester is on the banjo, backed by the Clinch Mountain Boys.

From a google search, I've found that Lester was made an honorary Clinch Mountain Boy in 2000/1 & quite active in his home town of Boones Mill, VA being recognised by the state for his contribution to music (http://lis.virginia.gov/cgi-bin/legp604.exe?021+ful+HJ21ER and http://www.highbeam.com/doc/1P2-12655523.html).

Does anybody know which Clinch Mountain Boys line-up this is & what the other is that recording he made with Ralph? (I can't find anything on http://www.ibiblio.org/hillwilliam/BGdiscography/). The Keep My Love With You tape was issued by Lester himself & I'd guess is late '80s or early '90s.

Any info would be much appreciated!

Achtop to flathead conversion rings for sale?

Just converted a '27 TB-Granada to a five string.  While I'm digging the archtop sound, I can't help but miss that flathead sweetness.  I was interested in seeing if anybody has a Hopkins/McPeake AT to flathead conversion ring or one of these Kelly ring conversion hoops?  I'd also consider a Blaylock conversion ring only if it can fit on a '27 Granada rim without being cut.

Thanks,

Candy Crush Saga?

I'm wondering if any of you have played this (easily addictive IMO) game? I've been playing it for a while. If a player is a member of Facebook, they have some benefits that non Facebook members don't have.

Absent Facebook membership, players can elect to buy features that can facilitate completing levels. As levels progress, they tend to become more challenging and, perhaps, more frustrating to complete.

This game is available as a free app for the iPhone, iPad, android and other similar or related devices. Also it is available for free download to a pc. Here is a link to the CCS website. www.candycrushsaga.com Caution! This game is very addictive and easy for one to become obsessed in playing it hours at a time.

Another word of Caution, there are features available for sale to help a person complete a troubling level. That fee could be as little as a few dollars or tens of dollars. However, please remember this as will, these levels can be completed without buying any boosters if you are a member of Facebook. If not a member, then you would have to buy a ticket for$.99, once and a while to move ahead to other levels.

As I have said, IMO, this game can easily become addictive, so give it serious thought before jumping in to play it. As for me, I'm already hooked!

If you do play this game, would you share some comments (assessment) about playing it? Thanks.

Note:  The above link worked on my draft, but doesn't seem to be working here.  A little help would be appreciated so it would be easy for members to quickly access the link. Thanks.
