Hello Everyone!
Names Jon, and I have a couple of questions I need some help on, but I wasn't able to find a thread that seemed appropriate to chime in on. So i figured i would do a double and introduce myself as I ask my questions.
To start, I have been doing music for 20 years, mostly percussion stuff, anything from symphonic style to drum corps. Currently 60's era hard jazz as played on a drum kit is fitting my fancy. However I have always wanted to learn the banjo, and last week someone bought me a beginners package, and i have been sucked in since. Things are, rather were going well until i started reading ahead. I wanted to make sure that everything in the book was explained. Well i have come across the song part of the book and my brain went "blah". I attached a picture in case what i am about to ask doesn't make sense, but here is my question.
I am familiar with written music, and I believe that i understand tabs and how they are used, However in the book that came with all of my stuff, they have two tabs tied together. Are you supposed to play them at the same time? Granted the top tab is [referenced as] the melody in the book, while the lower tab is the roll pattern. From everything i have learned about reading music, because they are tied they are to be played at the same time, For the most part that seems do-able, but at other times, not so much.
Any input would be very helpful. I do realize that I might be over thinking things (personal trait there), or that I just need to go out and buy a different/better book for beginners. Again thank you!
