yesterday i fentured into downhome guitars a great acoustic music store in Frankfort IL.i am an intermediate or so banjo player that plays mostly Scruugs style on a 15 yr old Alverrez. i decided to play the high end banjos in case i could afford an upgrade some day. I played a Sullivan V-35 and Radclif, a Stelling golden Cross, a Deering hartford,Calico, Sierra and Deluxe. Amazingly the one that I liked best was the Deering Deluxe, the Sierra sounded identical. The Sullivan seemed to ring too much, maybe I'm just not used to such a powerful banjo ,one little pick and it rings like a bell, the Stelling was also cool but with a different flavor, the Hartford was light and had a more mellow sound, the Deering neck made it very easy and comfortable to play,it seemed to be made just for me, anyway i had a very enjoyable afternoon, of course each Banjo was set up differently and you can adjust this to your own banjo taste.I am thinking that after I retire with sufficient funds I would purchase the Sierra and play that, the Sullivan has more potential as a hard driving Bluegrass monster sounding banjo, but i think it may take a while to get used to and it cost twice as much but I am thinking that it will hold its value if not increase in value.
