I'm pretty new to the banjo hangout, but one thing I have noticed is people posting vids and tunes of other people's songs... the same old standards over and over and over again! I know that to mimic others is a high form of respect and all that jazz, and it sure feels good to play something that 'resounds'. But how about to use a style rather than the tune to 'build' on their foundations? I have learned maybe five songs over as many years (including guitar songs), but my own pieces (I wouldn't dare call 'em songs) far outweigh anything I could ever regurgitate. But whatever floats your boat right? (I'll be the first to admit that!) Though I cannot play Foggy Mountain Breakdown or Cripple Creek (I have not learned them... yet), I am not intimidated by the playing of fellows like Scruggs (RIP)... I think there is nothing more satisfying than a decent composition! Life is short, here, here! Who's with me?
