head coatings

I just bought a 'new' old banjo, that has a top frosted head.  The frosting is warn down to clear in a fairly significant streak, and somewhat dirty under the strings.  I don't like that.  Plus, the head is very noisy when you mover your hand on it.  My other banjo had a clear head when new, and I didn't like that, so I changed it to a bottom frosted Remo.  Sounded good, looked better, imho, isn't noisy, and is easy to keep looking good.  Ya, I know there are those that like the funk of a worn head, but I ain't one of 'em.  Like being a meatetarian, it's a personal choice.  I am thinking I'd be happier with the look of a clean head, and would maybe like to change it, and I would go for a bottom coated head, if left to my own devices.  However, according to lots of stuff on the HO, this could change the sound of the banjo, and I pretty much like it the way it is.  My question is ... "How does the banjo know which side of the head is frosted?"    Could somebody explain to me how which side is frosted can change the tone?  It don't make sense to me, but perhaps somebody could clue me in??  I understand that there could easily be a difference between a frosted and clear head, or a Fiberskyn,  but not the other.  Help!
