Resonance, wood block rims

The rim/ tone ring combination is all important in the construction of the banjo, the resonance achieved by the two combined is the magical combination. For the sake of argument using a wood block rim of dissimilar materials and ignoring the grain structure of the woods will reduce the "Q" resonance of the rim, this method of construction without paying attention to the materials and grain structure will actually dampen any resonance and alter the sustain of the banjo. This may not be to bad a thing with an open back for old time where a plunky sound may be required. But do people combine wood block rims with a tone ring ?.  As a newby It sounds a little strange to me !.  Can anyone help me get my head around this ?.
