I bought a Mastercraft banjo to evaluate for the Young Appalachian Musicians (YAM) program, which needs some beginner instruments. The one I bought off of Craigslist is in like new condition. There was a buzzing at the first two frets but seems to be fine after that. Action was very low, even for kids, so I adjusted that some, but that did not fix the buzz. Looked to me like a slight backward bow. I adjusted the truss rod some today (first time I actually did that myself) and the buzzing disappeared for the unwound strings. There is still some buzz on the fourth. I figured I was on the right track.
Here is my question. After you make a truss rod adjustment, do you let it sit a while to see what the neck is going to do for a while. Is the immediate response to an adjustment what you will get or may the neck wood move even more after a few days. The reason I ask is that I want to get this in good playable condition before I donate it.
Thanks for any advice.
