I recently replaced some of my old Chieftains cassettes with CDs. They did much to introduce the world to Turlough O'Carolan, the great Irish harpist, born in 1670. This song is on their third album. Lord Inchiquin was the 4th Earl of Inchiquin, County Clare, Ireland. It sounds like a minuet until the second part, where O'Carolan inserts that signature unexpected, delightful melody. When he wrote it he was staying nearby with the Rev. Charles Massey, who had the only known painting of O'Carolan commissioned in about 1720. The penciled tab is how I remember my arrangements when I'm learning a song. I used the notation found in Donal O'Sullivan's biography called Carolan, The Life, Times and Music of an Irish Harper (interesting book). It was helpful to see how Ron Hughes of BHO plays and tabbed the song, too. Hope you enjoy!
