Moving to NYC in September

$

Because of a job promotion (my wife's) that requires relocation, we're moving to New York City in September.

I've been checking out the bluegrass scene online and have found some attractive-sounding jams in both Manhattan and Brooklyn.  I'm looking forward to checking them out and hopefully meeting some of you Hangout members who live in the city or nearby.

What can any of you say about the scene that I might not have found on the Web?

And is there any chance a 62-year-old Scruggs-style picker with a good ear and attitude can join an occasionally playing out band?

Had to take the car to shop so I bought ingredients for jewish chopped liver. My wife recalls fondly her trips from kansas to nyc to visit her grandfathers family, when she was a little girl. All german jewish immigrants. Wife always enjoyed their chopped liver. So today I am surprising her when she gets home. Also bought some rye bread, and matzo crackers. Garnished with egg slices, capers, cornichons, and parsley. Pic later. I am doing this from phone. Don't know how to attach pic from phone gallery. Brad

I have been doing some looking into having a neck made for a pot that I have. I have talked to Ron Coleman about a neck, as well as Wyatt Fawley. they have quated me prices for what I want. BUt, I have ran across another builder. I have herd that he is not worth the time of day. His name is T. Selman. I looked at his website and he has necks for the price range I am looking for. I want to know if I should go to him. And, I am trying to to confirm my suspicions about him. The other thing I have herd is he makes good necks. Is thereanyone who has dealed with him.

Playing While Singing POST-A-THON!

Well, I figured that many of us will be working on our lead singing while trying to play the banjo since John Boulding has started a new LICK of the WEEK series on the subject (in addition to the great version of The Old Home Place he posted earlier in the week).  I thought that maybe others might want to post some songs as you are working on them.  So, if you have a clip where you are singing and playing at the same time, put it here.

Here's one that I tried today.  It is inspired by Larry Sparks version of "What Kind of Man."  As I tried to shoot the video (about 20 takes), I realized that I often leave that last singing note of a phrase flat because my focus shifts to the banjo fill-in lick.  I'm going to keep working on patting my head and rubbing my stomach like John suggests so I can improve.

contest badges

Eric, Really like the Contest Idea, it's a great way to get everyone picking, learning and sharing!

Just a thought though, I saw mentioned that you had thought about giving a shield or badge to add to profile picture/ID of those who placed in the contest. Seeing as not all that many people have entered (on this occasion!!!) How about giving everyone who entered a badge for their profile and then extra special ones for those who place 1-3.

Either way, great idea, I have learned heaps from listening to other pickers versions, got some really great new ideas for my own playing and have thoroughly enjoyed the whole thing. I've practiced Foggy a whole lot more than I would have done too! Thank You!!!

Another stroke of genius and really cool thing to do, was to choose Foggy as the first ever contest tune, truly awesome way to pay tribute to Earl. Also love the bill board style emblem you used for the logo of the contest - that, my friend is cool!

Can't wait for July's contest! Do you feel like giving us a hint of the subject tune? wink

Gold Tone OB250 vs. OB250+

I have read all sorts of great things here about Gold Tone and about Wayne Rogers specifically, and I wanted to contribute to that praise.

I came into an OB-250 Plus (at least that's what it was sold as) for a good price. After considering the deal I got on it, I became concerned that I had purchased a regular OB-250. Of course the SN had the model written on it but I became paranoid that someone had penned in a little "+" sign next to the name (It was a FleaBay purchases, after all). So I went straight to the source and wanted to share what I learned from Mr. Rogers. If this is elementary to you old schoolers than please just entertain the excitement of a banjo newb.

The OB-250 plus of course has the nice JLS tone ring. Unlike the standard tone ring that comes on the OB-250 (non-plus) that is squared off at the top where it meets the head, the JLS ring is more rounded. Also, the neck being curly maple makes it more likely to be a plus. Additionally, the bridge on my banjo has a Gary Sosebee bridge which is what comes with the 250+. So Mr. Rogers asked that I email him some pics of the banjo, which I did. His verdict: I indeed had a Gold Tone Orange Blossom OB-250+. It sounds pretty sweet too.

Just wanted to pass along what I had learned and give props to a great man and a great company.

Wonder what is on this guys mind?,,,,,,,

Taylor Swift Vs. Westboro Church

Finally finished

Hello, and thanks to everyone who gave me advice, sometimes without know that they were doing so. I listened to the advice to convert the Lyon and Healy "Own Make" Style A (1923 I believe) from a tango tenor to a five string. Because some warned the cost might not be worth it because of the sound of that particular pot I saved money by doing it myself. Didn't save time and hassle and fretting, but that is another story altogether. My total cost including the original Lyon and Healy came to under $500 including all the shipping and sales taxes. Not too bad considering that I saw an identical Lyon and Healy sell two weeks before I got mine that went for $400 before shipping.

I took the advice and got the inexpensive unfinished Saga neck and finished it with Tru Oil. I got a 3 oz bottle and that gave me 15 coats. I didn't wait long enough for suggestions on the tuners and got Grovers. But I got them at 40% off and no shipping or sales tax, which is why I acted so quickly. They seem fine, but I realize that the Gotoh would probably have been better.

Fitting the neck caused some fits. I am a good woodturner, but this kind of work is not something I normally do. I didn't have a jig, so everything had to be done by hand and lots of sandpaper, something that I have no lack of in my shop. The fit seems pretty good, at least to my untrained eye.

The truss rod cover I made myself from some curly Hawaiian Koa I had in the shop. I was pretty happy with that. And the cost was reasonable, as in nothing. I took out the coiled spring that served as a "tone ring" and hand bent a 1/4" bronze rod. WOW!, do I ever wish I could have bought a 10 3/4" bronze ring, but I couldn't find such a beast. The Kirshner "Unique" tailpiece broke, I guess at 90 some parts of me might break as well. So I bought a new Kirshner tailpiece as you can see from the photos. I also found that the head was broken so I replaced that, and thank you to all of you who talked me through that. I have attached a photo of the side of the pot to remind everyone that the Lyone and Healy "Own Make" uses a Van Eps tension ring. I, obviously kept well clear of messing with that any more than I absolutely had to, as in replacing the head.

And it actually sounds pretty good, at least to my ear. When I find someone who can play better than I do and knows how to create a sound file I will try and post what it sounds like and you can make your own judgements.
