I just saw this on facebook:

http://bluegrassnation.org/earl-scruggs-gibson-banjo-part-of-country-music-hall-of-fame-display/

Legendary musician Earl Scruggs’ Gibson RB-Granada Mastertone banjo will become part of the Country Music Hall of Fame® and Museum’s “Precious Jewels” display, museum officials announced today. This banjo, which was Scruggs’ primary instrument and has never before been exhibited, will go on display July 12.

The “Precious Jewels” display, which is located on the third floor within the museum’s core exhibition, Sing Me Back Home: A Journey Through Country Music, spotlights a handful of seminal instruments upon which much of the foundation of American music was created. Other instruments on display as “Precious Jewels” include Mother Maybelle Carter’s Gibson L-5 guitar, Lester Flatt’s Martin D-28 guitar, Bill Monroe’s Gibson F-5 mandolin, Jimmie Rodgers’ Martin 00-18 guitar and Hank Williams’ Martin D-28 guitar.

String excursion

No, not an outing to a local festival, but a close look at the vibratory modes of a single string in the open position.  It's done on violin, but the fundamental (no pun intended) action is the same for any stringed instrument.  This might be a bit more technical than what you were hoping for, but it does show what a good camera and super-slow-motion video are capable of capturing. (You can fast-forward to the juicy parts from about 30 seconds onward...)

LeVan woodie sound file follow-up

It's been a while.  Many months ago, it seems, I made a woodie with a 250 year old walnut rim, a cherry neck and a black locust tone ring.  I posted all the pictures in progress - all the brass parts were hand-made, and it has an 80 year old Rodgers head from a no. 9 tubaphone conversion.

The original thread was called "Woodie made from scratch", and you can read the whole thing:

http://www.banjohangout.org/topic/254869

Here's what it looks like - it has a snap-on resonator:

Details of how it was made:

It has a short scale, but 24 frets, in order to put the bridge near the middle of the  head for a plunky sound.

So, The person I made it for, John Miller, has sent me sound files, which I'd like to share. I have put them all on my home page, but I'm posting most of them here - it's a kind of album. John's a professional guitarist and musical scholar who performs and teaches all around the world and has made many many CDs, so I'm happy to be able to post these:

(1) Willie Moore in mountain Modal tuning

(2) Chinquipin pie in Mountain Modal tuning

(3) Bright Sunny South, a Dock Boggs tune played with bare fingers

(4) Little Omie, let your bangs hang low, a Gaither Carlton tune played in double C tuning

(5) She'll be Comin' Around the Mountain" also in double C

I changed a split head on my Style 1 Weymann 5-string (I recently acquired a plectrum, too), and thought it might be nice to get some photos of their rather unusual "Megaphonic" rim and its arched top tone ring.  Herewith for anyone who might be interested are some of those shots...

Cheers,

My old antique junker means a lot to me and its time I get it in playing condition. Its got holes in the dowel and its all messed up in every which way you could think of.

Who should I send it to for a complete reboot? I mean re drilling the peghead, re plating it and everything. It doesnt need to be re fretted but definitely everything else lol

thanks guys. It might be beyond repair but it means a lot to me like I said and I'd just like to get her looking pretty lol

Banjo Primer

Im using Geoff Hohwald Banjo Primer for my first instruction. Im trying to take it slow and get the material down good before moving on. So that's where my question is. It has a CD in back to play along with and goes through a couple speeds then to a medium jam speed. Should I stick with each part till I can play along at medium jam speed or move once I get the motions down good and let the speed come later?

Clifftop's coming you better get ready

Banjo Teachers: Your policy on missed lessons

$

This has probably been brought up before, but I don't see any threads on it. So, here's my dilemma: I am pretty relaxed regarding missed lessons but some of my students miss a lot with pretty thin excuses. I just charge as you go and if you miss a lesson that's OK you don't pay for missed lessons.

I suspect that if my policy included the following there would be a lot less missed lessons, and it might be better for both of us (i.e. fewer missed lessons equates to better progress for the student):

1. students pay by the month in advance

2. if we can find a time for make up lesson that week OK, but if not they are out the money

So, what's your policy and how is it working? You don't have to be a teacher to respond to this question. If you are a student, what is your teacher's policy and how is that working for you?

Thanks for your insights.

Elkins Cherry Bridge

I just bought some more stainless pick blanks from Gene Elkins. I also bought a 100-year-old cherry/ebony bridge. I've been using my favorites: Scorpion, Kat-Eyz and Snuffys. I put this bridge on my Lane Model D top-tension and was impressed by the clarity and separation. The sound is well-balanced and the bass is clear and strong. I'm going to play it for a while and then switch back to the Kat-Eyz I had on it for comparison.

How Often to Replace the Head ?

Is there a rule of thumb ? I often see players with their heads so worn that the frosting is completely gone where the picks make contact. I know this is no big deal and does not effect the sound too much, or does it ? Anyway, the head on my banjo is fairly new and does not need replaced now, but when will it be  time ?

Garland Shuping

I found some earlier posts about Garland and thought I'd add my story. In 1975 I obtained one of his old banjos from Glen Irvin of the Irvin Twins. It was an RB5 copy and had a neck and resonator bound in Abalone. He said some of the parts were Stew-Mac and added that Randy Wood did the neck and resonator. Still have the banjo a letter from Garland telling me about it's history.

Storage containers are for more than storage.

I have a smallish yard and little sun but love cucumbers, tomatoes, etc. I have to put what I grow in one corner by the driveway to catch the morning sun so I have been growing in 18 gallon storage containers. I got a lot of info on the net naturally.

I have been experimenting with what is called a self watering container. You do have to water them but the water goes in the bottom and the mix sits on a shelf with some of the mix extending into the water which draws it up from the bottom. Works pretty good.

tips for cleaning gunk off lacquer neck?

$

A used banjo has a thin accumulation of gunk on the back of the neck. Presumably, this is an accumulation or hand oil or sweat from the previous owner(s). It is not noticeable at first, but the gunk starts to clump up after a bit of playing.

The finish is lacquer. What is the best way to clean this without messing the finish?

Good day!

I've just read in the discussion forum that they are posting their thoughts about cement. And yes, Portland Cement is the best and highly cement mostly recommended by the experts. It is already the main cement that uses all over the world. It is also an environmentally-friendly cement. It is be able to be  consistent and standards-complying quality. In choosing a cement, you really must choose the best because it is the main foundation. Thank you.
