problem posting embedded youtube clips

for the past couple days, I've noticed that you can't post an embedded youtube clip when you use the source option and you're making an initial post.

you can post the entry and then go back and edit it and drop the embedded  clip in. But you get errors when you try to post it on the first attempt

Torn between conversion, or trade

I am in a bit of a dilemma, at least thought wise. I now have 2 bluegrass banjos. I traded away an open back. The first is a Hatfield Aurora. No problems there, it is a great banjo. I have a 2nd banjo, that used to be my only banjo. It is a Smith Legend woody. It plays great and sounds pretty good. Now, here's the dilemma. I really want an open back. I'm no clawhammer player, but it is fun to learn, and very relaxing. I recently asked a question in this forum, and I found out that I can order a flange bracket from Rickard Banjos, and I'll have a good open back banjo. But, the tension hoop is still high, and it would be a fairly heavy open back. But, i would be able to convert it back, if i wanted. My dilemma is, should I go that route, for about 90 bucks, or should I just trade the Smith, for a good open back. I know it's my decision, but I'm asking for opinions. Thanks,

Kevin

Well..after traveling over 3000 miles from California to Glasgow, KY. to get my new Hatfield banjo, I will be picking it up tomorrow morning from Arthur himself. Tonight, we were in Cave City, KY to see Arthur's band play, and tomorrow morning can't come soon enough. I'll be posting pictures, sound clips,  and video soon :)

Medium, high or low head on my Gold Tone?

Decided to try out a Renaissance head on my CC-OT. Gold Tone lists this banjo as having a medium crown head, so I ordered a medium crown renaissance head from Smakula. However, it's much taller than the  Fyberskin that came off, and unfortunately, the ring bottoms out on the heel before achieving tension. Any ideas? Should I order a low crown or maybe did I get the wrong head?

I've been playing regularly for more than a year now and having problems singing while playing. Even if I know how to play the song fairly well, when I start singing, the whole thing falls apart. Any help is appreciated.

How Long To Learn a Song By Ear

$

This is for the players that learn songs, or learn how to play banjo to a song, by listening/playing to it. I am wondering what the average time period is to learn the correct scales/chords etc for a song. I am asking this because I recently changed the way I practice, and I'm not sure if I'm spinning my tires or actually progressing. I have been practicing to the same backing track every evening for days now, but it seems I still can't get it right. Just curious.

Thanks.

A banjo hangout exclusive!

This is a live recording from last Thursday (June 27 2013) of me playing The Cuckoo Bird accompanied by Matt Elliott on the washboard and drums (simultaneously). While I have been playing with Matt for a number of years (he usually plays drums accompanying my electric guitar), this is the first time he has ever backed me while I'm playing banjo. For a number of reasons we were both too busy to get together for a rehearsal, so this is it, finding out how it's going to sound live on stage in front of an audience. Pretty bloody exciting. I owe a lot to Matt, I wouldn't even be playing banjo if it wasn't for him, because it was him lending me a banjo last year that got me started. In fact I finally returned his long-loaned banjo to him at this gig as I now have three of my own!

The gig was Live in Hillbilliy Heaven at the Gollan Hotel in Lismore, New South Wales, Australia. Featuring Davey Bob Ramsey with Matt Elliott, Ruthie-ma-Toothie, Jimmy Willing & the Real Gone Hick-Ups and the Perch Creek Family Jug Band.

Good Saturday Morning

Will a Kavanjo head & pickup alter the acoustic sound of my banjo?

Howdy,

I'm thinking of getting a Kavanjo pickup for my banjo - I play in a band with drums, bass, mandolin and guitar, aswell as 4 vocals so I want  something that I can use at high volumes without feedback. Which I've heard the Kavanjo is great for.

Trouble is, I'm not sure if it will change the natural sound of my banjo when not plugged in? We do play unplugged a lot - busking, gardens etc. So this is really quite important for me.

Any help would be appreciated!

Cheers,

Guntur.

Cracks in Peghead - Newbie wants to know...

I'm new here, and must say -- lots of great info and great site.  I played some acoustic guitar on an old Ibanez back when they were made in Japan.  Well, that was some 30 years ago when I was in high school.  I've always liked the sound of the banjo, and walked into the local pawn shop the other day, and they had 2 banjos.

One is a newish Savannah SB-80, and the other is an old Kay with Kay and K on the peghead (i think it's called).  The old Kay sounds as good to me, if not better than the newish SB-80, and the wood seems to be heavier and better built.  However, and it's a big however, is that there are two visible vertical cracks coming down the back of the peghead from each of the top tuners.  This is visible in the black paint coating only, and i don't really see any depth -- but, it makes me wonder if there is a good chance that one or both of the tuners may pop out or the peghead give way altogether.

Prices:   Savannah - SB-80 $200 (I can probably acquire it at lower cost)                 Kay (K) -$75

Should I just skip the Kay?   Heck, should I skip'em both?

I have considered buying new, and may just go that route.  Any info on these two banjos would be great.  Otherwise, I'm leaning towards the Mastercraft Bluegrass Maple.  Thoughts and suggestions welcomed, I've been pondering this for over a week and would really like to commit to something soon.

If you've made it this long through my first dreary post, thanks for hanging in there!  :-)

Huss and Dalton Banjo Opinions?

$

Banjo corner at AcousticMusic.Org in Guilford, CT. Some OME's (bluegrass and open back), Flatiron, a 20's Vega, and some Huss and Dalton.

There is a particular H&D Singletree, apparently one of the first with an 11" head that was spec'd out by the shops owner for himself, but he got sick of trying to learn clawhammer. It has a short scale, no ornamentation anywheres on the headstock or neck, and has no metal tone ring or anything, the wood is just right on the head. I just sold my Saga SS10 with the intention of upgrading to something better.

It seems like their banjos arent anywhere near as popular as their guitars. Any insight? Opinions?

Performance Anxiety (Stage Fright)

One of the reasons I stopped playing the banjo six years ago was due to performance anxiety.  I practiced religiously for at least an hour a day until I played rather well and enjoyed playing.  The problem; people would always want to hear me play and I would mess up terribly.  I would get so frustrated at myself at not being able to perform for others I just eventually stopped playing all together.  I've been practicing again for about a month and most is coming back but the anxiety of playing in front of others is still there.  I do suffer from generalized anxiety and have been on medication my entire adult life but it doesn't seem to help with playing the banjo.  I'm sure others suffer from stage fright, so how did you get over it?

Thanks....

FMB with banjo played flat on my knees

Thought I'd put this in as a novelty contest entry. When I'm doing banjo setups, I like to play Cripple Creek and Fireball Mail this way, so the sound cames staright at my ears, instead of relying on room acoustics. First time I've done FMB, though!!

Gretsch 4 String

I was wondering when my "new" Gretsch 4 string banjo was made.

This serial number seems real high at 98124, but the wood shows a lot of surface cracks.

The tuning pegs no longer working, so I had to replace them.  So, tuning pegs, new strings, and a new bridge and it sounds good to me.

I was just wondering if anyone knew when it was made.

Thank you.

Crowe vs. Std Spacing

I don't know that much about the bridge spacing. I do know that there is a difference, how much ? I don't know. Does Crowe spacing make a considerable difference in sound ?
