I am enjoying reading and tinkering with my banjo's setup and have focused on the string angle and downpressure in regard to the tailpiece. I have a range of tailpiece length and string angle I want to acheive for sound testing purposes but am stuck and need enlightenment.
The stock tailpiece on my banjo barely measures over 2" end to end and is much shorter regarding actual string guidance. This also limits me to a less than desired string angle. I am looking to increase the length to the "ideal" range which I've read to be 2 1/2 - 2 3/4" and a string angle of 14-15. I would appreciate any input regarding string angle and tailpiece length but primarily want to find out how to measure tailpieces and where to find out the length of new tailpieces. Many websites show the weight of the tailpiece which is important but none seem to offer dimensions.
SO where do you measure 'from' and 'to'? And how do you find out the measurements of tailpieces when searching to buy online?
