I want to give a shout-out to my friend Dan Knowles. We all know he is a masterful artist and his design and inlay work is unsurpassed. But I wanted to highlight an example of his incredible attention to detail....
Over the New Years holiday, I spent some time with David Emery. We decided to install a new head on his Vega tubaphone (Dan Knowles) conversion. During the work, I snapped a few photos of the banjo.
Take a look at the 5th string pip Dan installed on this neck. It is exactly even with the 5th fret for perfect intonation. Notice that the 5th fret is shortened to allow the pip do sit right beside. Also see how the pip itself is specially cut to be exactly in line with the front edge of the fret.
Details like this are why Dan Knowles necks provide the BEST INTONATION of any I've ever played.
