I recently read where the 5th string nut on these can be a little high, and consequently acts as the fret rather than allowing the string to actually get pressed on to the fret. Therefore, when you capo at a higher fret you have to re-tune the 5th string. I went to my ESS and found that exact thing. My 5th string doesn't touch the 5th fret at all. So the solution proposed was making the notch a little deeper in the nut. Two questions:
1. What is the magical tool to do this? I don't have many super fine tools for small work, not that I wouldn't go and find what I need. Just don't know what it would be.
2. Can it be done without the 5th string then being in contact with the neck between the nut and the tuner? I do remember seeing a tiny plastic sleeve or tube covering the 5th string at this section so as to not rub the neck. Is that the solution or is there another? I am also wondering if I can increase that space at all if I wind as high as I can on the tuner peg. It's not all that high on the peg right now.
If this is a major project I may just live with the re-tune requirement.
Thanks.
