one of the fiddlers i jam with pretty often is from vermont, where apparently they like to be contrary and play barlow knife in D instead of G. i haven't been able to come up with a decent way to play it in D on the fly and can't seem to find any fiddle versions in D online to figure it out leisurely by ear. i usually have a guitar capo in my pocket in case a song in a weird key comes up and i did use it last time to capo at 7(ithink) in open G tuning to get into D. that worked but sounded pretty bg/mandolinish. any recommendations on this from the pros? i have tried both double D and open D tuning. part of my problem is i hear it in my head in G and can't shift it and figure it out at home without the fiddle playing.
