I've always wondered what keeps gold worth what it is -- what if people stop regarding shiny gold and pretty stones and gems and rare earth metals as valuable? Can gold, by itself, with all its lustre and gorgeous look calm a person in distress? Can it offer peace? Can it make you laugh? Can it fill you with joy? At face value, is gold really worth anything? Why does it continue to hold any value at all then? Why do we put our confidence in something that can't really make us happy on its own?
