Is it necessary to play melodic/single string?

I have a few instructional books that seem to dedicate equal portions of their pages to Bill Keith melodic or Don Reno single string techniques. Now, I am still new to this and should probably have an open mind, but I don't like these styles. If I want to play melodic or single string I would rather just play my guitar. Is it okay to just want to play like Earl (or JD) or are you supposed to learn these other styles to be a "well rounded" player? Thanks!
