I once saw Liberace play chopsticks.... it was on the Muppets show eons ago when my kids were little. He started out with the two finger stuff and graduated to play the song in a way that sounded like a concert pianist would. Funny how that memory came back... But I digress,..... My grandkids came over last night....ages 2 through 6. They always like to hear Grandpa Robes play something. No matter what I play,...they always ask..."What was that one?" So, last night I picked up the banjola and Zach says,... play something I know! My son said the look on my face was akin to me trying to figure out the square root of 2,158,311.... So I say,...do you know "X".... I just get a blank look,.... Okay,.... how about "Y".....blank look and a "no" headshake....... How about "Z"! Zach looks at Hannah,... then at Lilly,.... and all three shake their heads. I sit there for a second just strumming and going through some warm up chords trying to figure out a song they might know. Little Lilly (4) lights up and says .....I know that one you are playing! I look at my son,... he shrugs his shoulders and ask Lilly what song I am playing. "Skip to my Lou!" She says. "We just learned it in (pre) school". I close my eyes for a second trying to bring up the song in my head. Hmmmmm,... Okay,...got it,.... Open G,... D7,.... just those two. Dad-gum if she wasn't spot-on. A quick run in head to get the syncopation and off I we go. Lilly had the 1st verse and the chorus and did a good job,.... smiling the whole time. Whilst I play I nod to my book of lead sheets and my son pulls out the lead sheet with the lyrics. I did most of the verses,... the kids jumped in at the Chorus and we had a heck of a good time for about 10 minutes.... Sometimes the simple stuff can be a hoot,....
