On the way back home from Raleigh-Durham to the Finger Lakes region of New York State yesterday, I stopped off at Floyd's County Store and played two hours in the Sunday 2-5 jam. My first time there. About 10-12 people played. Quite a large audience of observers, customers, etc. While a few of the tunes played were Old Time, many were Gospel, Country, etc. I was a little surprised that I was the only Clawhammer player there; one player asked if I was playing Clawhammer -- said he hadn't really heard much Clawhammer-style banjo before. Two other banjo players were playing Scruggs-style, and any instrumentals played by various players were typically Bluegrass tunes, not Old Time tunes.
One couple -- I would guess early to mid-fifties -- and perhaps they're "regulars" at these jams -- was really good on their vocal duets ... did "Fox on the Run," "Down in the Willow Garden," and a couple of other tunes. She could really belt out the vocals -- played mandolin.
I was proud of my vocal and clawhammering when I did "Don't Get Trouble In Your MInd" and the way the audience responded -- some considerable "whoopin'" and "hollerin.'".
