I've been learning some new licks lately, trying to spice up my playing. I've stuck a lick that's hard for me in the middle of an old familiar song. I can play the lick just fine on its own, or with the few measures before it, but in the context of the whole song, I get right up on the lick and my brain says, "OMG HERE COMES THAT TOUGH LICK" and I freeze.
Now I *know* this is a purely psychological problem, because this is the second new lick I stuck in this song. I did the exact same thing on the first lick at first, freezing up when I got to it. Now I breeze right through the first lick knowing there's a harder one later on.
Anybody have any good advice for overcoming this anticipatory choke? (Anybody who says "add a third hard lick" I'll have to hunt you down like a dog, m'kay?)
