A few months ago I started a thread about how my granddaughter, Shawna, being accepted as an apprentice dancer for a professional dance company. She is 13 years old, and the dance company requires you be 14 to become an apprentice. But my granddaughter applied anyway and explained to the owner of the company that she had been dancing since 3 years of age and she would appreciate a tryout. There were six girls trying out for one opening, and Shawna was the one they chose. Apprentices don't get paid and don't get to perform in shows, but are there to learn to become a professional dancer. It's a good opportunity. A few weeks into her apprenticeship, Shawna was asked to understudy one of the star dancers. Now we learn that she has been selected to perform with the professionals at their shows later this month. This makes her the youngest dancer to ever perform with this troupe. She still won't get paid, but it's a step closer to fulfilling her dreams of becoming a professional dancer. She has worked really hard and we are very, very proud of her. We got a scare early on when she cracked a bone in her foot, but she followed doctor's orders and exercised diligently and she's back. Proud, proud, proud.
