In the latter past of the 1970s, Rounder and County record companies provided the first re-releases of F&S early Columbia recordings, making their classic sound widely available to many of my generation for the first time. I greatly enjoyed the liner notes that accompanied them.
With the advent of the CD format, I have slowly "replaced" some of my LPs with box sets and have found the liner notes with those, on some occasions, conflict with what was previously asserted. Of interest here is the fact that Jake Tullock alone was noted as the bassist on the County release of the "Blue Ridge Cabin Home" LP, a selection of F&S material from 1955-1957.
Bear Family's F&S 1948-1959 box set shows Jake's first session with F&S as May 1954. He is then absent from all sessions from Sept 1955 thru January 1958, obviously contradicting the previous LP information. I have, of course, noted publicity photos of the group at various times with Hylo Brown and Onie Wheeler posing with a bass. Does anyone of that "era" have any information regarding this? Was Jake an "on again/off again" sideman at first? Was his bass work not considered "studio worthy", thus requiring the use of studio musicians? Was he ill?
