I went to the school at the one room school in my avatar for those grades.
Cogan House elementary school, at Cogan House, PA part of the Liberty joint school system in Lycoming county Pennsylvania, in the mid 1950s
My school teacher was Mr C C Cooster, he was in his 70s We had an out house and we carried drinking water in a ten gallon milk can that certain ones were scheduled to carry about 2/10 mi, if they were big and strong enough, after we pumped it near full from a hand pump when we got off the bus in the morning at the Community hall down on the hard road. In school we had a metal bucket with a metal dipper we all drank out of when you got permission.
Mr Cooster drove I think a 1948 Chevy that sounded like it was idled at 4,000 rpms or more, :), when he warmed it up in the after noon before going home. He always came in early and started the coal fired stove that sat near the back of the class room to have it almost warmed up when we got there. He was strict but I have many good memories,
Ii wasn't a popular kid and didn't like any school then, just wanted to sneak off and go fishing and usually got caught and in trouble here at school then at home also. I was a daydreamer, it was not easy to learn from books when you eyes and heart are out the window in the woods. This school was run I think up until 1960 or there about's. When we graduated from this school we got high classed and went to Liberty middle, junior and senior school out at Liberty, PA. I'm guessing at this school we rode I think close to 25 or 30 miles on the bus. Cogan House was only about 10 miles or so from our rented farm house about 1 1/2 mi south of White Pine, PA. It had a big barn out back we use to play in, Wonder we didn't get killed some of the things we done in that barn. The picture of the barns in PA that Tom put up in his thread got me to thinking about this.
Prior to going to Cogan House, in the early 50s I went to a 2 room school at White Pine, Pa An LOL My school teacher there was Wayne Taylor's Mother. Wayne I think played banjo and guitar for the USN bluegrass band and Appaloosa, think he still might but am not sure. I left a post on the Appaloosa site telling some about how we knew his Ma and PA. His Ma whipped my butt more that once lol. Then My Ma whoop it again when I got home. My next older brother and I use to work on his Dad, Carl Taylor's, farm pulling mustard in his fields and helping with planting peas and so other small jobs. Brother Jack and I use to baby set Wayne and his brother Kevin. Mr and Mrs Taylor were mighty fine folks well educated from a university in WV. Mrs Taylor was aslo one of my teachers at Liberty school in 7th grade.
Some of my best memories in my whole life come from this time. When in 1949 we moved to White Pine, and Mrs Taylor, lol from Phiadelphia, PA. Right from city living to also carrying our home water from a spring and using an outhouse from then on till I went into the USAF at 17yrs old.. I went to 2nd, 3rd, 4th, & 4th grade at White pine. This place made the country my life except for the USAF part.
Sorry, just got the erg to share a little of some of my good memories of the passed. I would enjoy hearing some of yours. :)
