Beginner Question- Hammer-On / Pull-Off

I've been playing for a few months and ran into something that I wasn't too familiar with this evening. Specifically, a Hammer-On and  Pull-Off that I haven't done before. I think I may understand how it is to be played, but if anyone wants to give me some advice, it would be great. I'd hate to be practicing it incorrectly!

If you want to see the specific tab I'm working on, you can find it right here: http://banjoteacher.com/tablature/PDFs/SittingOnTopOfTheWorld-BanjoTea.pdf

At the beginning of the 2nd measure, there is a Hammer-On that is part of an eighth note. It reads to Hammer-On the 2nd string from 2nd fret to the 3rd fret, and then play an open 1st string to complete the eight note. So does that mean I play the 2nd string on the 2nd fret, and then quickly hammer-on to the 3rd fret (with my ring finger) and then continue and play the open 1st string?

Similarly, in the 4th measure, there is a eight note that shows a Pull-Off on the 3rd string from the 3rd fret to the 2nd fret, and then the 2nd string open to complete the eight note. In this instance, should I be fretting both the 2nd fret (with my middle finger) and 3rd fret (with my ring finger) on the 3rd string and then after playing the 3rd string, Pull Off only my ring finger, but leave the 2nd fret down and then continue quickly to play the open 2nd string?

I'm not sure if my explanation made any sense and if you are willing to take the time to view the link that I copied, you'll be able to see what I'm talking about without having to read my possibly confusing description!

Any advice or input would be very welcome.

I'm also curious how to figure out which are the melody notes. I know the song fairly well but I just started playing it and I'm having trouble hearing the melody notes or understanding where I am in the song, in relation to the lyrics.

Thanks in advance!
