This is something that I recently discovered and thought I would share it with the hangout community.....
Over the years I have built quite a few necks for several members on the hangout as well as others but recently I have noticed on a couple of banjos I own and play that have my necks on them that the lacquer on the area of the Gibson name had turned yellow.
Well I started looking at a couple of my buddies that had necks that I had built and I noticed that they both had the same yellowing in about the same place.
I got concerned thinking that it was something that maybe I was doing wrong in the finish process and couldn't for the life of me figure it out.
Last year a Banjothon, while having a discussion with Frank Neat, I asked his opinion of what might be the problem and he immediately
told me what was causing this.
The clip on tuners we are all using that has the rubber clamp protector is somehow reacting to the nitro finish and causing it to yellow! It seems alot of us pickers clamp the tuner on and keep it on peg head for the duration of time we are playing.
So there you have it,
Don't know if anyone else has noticed this and may or may not be interested but I just thought I would share this with everyone.
I am kind of ashamed that I wasn't smart enough to figure this out on my own!
Happy Picking!
