I recently received a Bill Miller 10 15/16" pre-mounted calf skin head. I had to wet it a bit as per the instructions to get it started, but finally managed to get all hooks back on and finger tight. I then tightened all hooks about a 1/4 turn and the head seems quite tight already. The problem is the tension hoop still needs to come down about 1/8" to match back up with the neck and give the strings clearance at the tension hoop.
I have never installed a hide head before so I am not sure if I can just wet the head more to get it to stretch and then tighten the tension hoop, or could that cause the head to be too tight and perhaps split when it dries?
