I have been noticing that when I use a capo anywhere that my banjo really pops the notes out and the sound is fantastic. The only thing the capo does different than the nut is; in effect the strings go over a very small surface, the angle the strings make going over the nut may be less than what is caused by the capo, and that surface is brass instead of bone. So I am wondering why wouldn't the nut be made from brass and have the string grooves made so that they go over a small surface similar to a fret? Has anyone tried this? Also if the effect is caused more by the angle the strings go over the nut, something like a capo could be made to go on the tuner side of the nut to increase that angle. Whadda ya think?
