It was on this day 151 years ago that the American Civil War (known by some as the War of Northern Aggression) began when Confederate batteries opened fire on Fort Sumter in Charleston harbor. By the time the war ended, four years later, some 680,000 were dead on both sides, and another 470,000 wounded in battle.
