10 Buck Neck Rasp Alert!

I’m always on the lookout for a new toy, so I picked this up at my local farm supply store.  It’s known as a Ferrier’s rasp and is made for filing horse hooves.  It has a VERY aggressive rasp pattern on one side and a smoother cut on the other and is BIG, with the flat business end measuring 1-3/4” by 14”.

What was surprising was how inexpensive it was compared to the supply house “neck rasps”.  The rasp was $10 and the handle an additional $5, and it shapes a neck like nobody’s business.  It was very easy keep the neck relatively hump free, most likely the result of its size and mass.  Obviously this is for the rough out phase, but this rasp and 60 grit paper on a backer board would do about 90% of the shaping operation for most folks.  Yes, it even handles the concave areas fairly easily.

Just a head’s up on a great bargain the next time you stop in to get chicken scratch!
