I've been learning to play the banjo for the last year and a half, and only venturing into tunings other than G for the last half year or so. Hoping to get some advice from more experienced players.
I've recently learned a couple of tunes in double C tuning. My question is this: how important would you say is it, when strumming the C chord, to fret the first string to change it from D to E? If I strum it open, I know that it's not a proper C chord, but it sounds quite nice, and a bit archaic, in a similar way that the open strum in G modal tuning sounds archaic. And it's so much easier!
Any thoughts? Anyone else plays it open? On the other hand, does anyone think playing it open is a bad habit I should nip in the bud?
