I've become increasingly interested in "traditional" and ITM style playing in recent months. I've bought a 19-fret tenor and like it, tried it 17-fret and not so keen, with my XL-size "driller's hands". I do have a few lower-end banjos about, because I travel with them sometimes; I've tried as an experiment, fitting mando strings to the lower two strings and that seems to give be quite successful.
Moving on, I have a Gibson RB250 which I bought cheaply some years ago from someone who was selling up an emigrating. I had a short-lived stab at bluegrass but it didn't stick, and I have a open-back which I like anyway. It occurred to me that the Gibson would sound good in GDAE and I might use it like that; but whereas I don't much care if I damage one of my throw-away travel banjos by - say- applying too much tension on wrong string gauges and damaging the tuners, I don't want to do this to an instrument like that and which has sentimental attachment as well.
So, to save me re-inventing the wheel, does anyone have any experience of what strings to use for GDAE tuning on a 22-fret banjo?
