My Y2K RB3 is approaching its next string change and I am considering giving the reproduction Presto tailpiece that came on it another go.
I removed that Presto years ago because it pealed like the bells of London whenever I played. I recall the harmonic was akin to the 4th string chimed at the seventh fret. In fact that Presto suspended sounds a very brief A flat-ish note when struck. So I perceive its resonate frequency must reside somewhere around Ab.
I first replaced my Gibson's Presto with a Price SL5 and then recently with an old Paramount window latch style..
Considering the success others have with their Prestos getting that authentic bluegrass sound, it must be misunderstanding mine. I've seen several Prestos that practically lay flat just above the banjo's head, and others that hover angled down about 1/8" inch or so above the head. Mine was more the latter. Which is recommended? Is there a proper way to set up a Presto that actually aids a banjo's tone?
