Just thought I'd toss something out there - if you're looking for a really good-sounding and well-playing guitar for low $$, look at Seagulls. Excellent value for money anyway, with the added advantage that they're North American built (Canada). There are things I don't like about them - the neck shaping could be more brilliant (particularly towards the heel) and you'll see things like braces that could have been sanded more diligently. But whaddya want for less than $500? They sound VERY good and play easy. And the seen to be pretty sturdy.
I don't own one; the shop where I teach carries them (no, I don't get commissioned) and I pulla guitar off the wall whenever I plan to play behind a student. I generally pull a Seagull, because it sounds good and I don't have to worry about dinging it.
