I am only 1 month into my banjo journey. I bought a used Alvarez Silver Belle to learn on. Right away, I had a buzz on the B string at the 1st fret so a couple of buddies of mine suggested that I purchase and install a taller bridge. After replacing the bridge, the buzz went away. I went ahead and changed out the strings to a medium gage and everything seemed fine. However, now the 5th string (high G) doesn’t ring as true and loud as the other four. It sounds like a cross between a buzz and a muffle. I don’t see where anything is touching the string. Would a lighter gage string help eliminate this problem? What else should I be looking for? Suggestions? I'm not sure what gage strings the banjo had on it before I changed them.
