I have a 3 ply rim in my rb-4 that was painted black I guess to match the 70's rims. I decided to remove the paint so I got some denatured alcohol and it came right off. I'm one of those people that will experiment with things knowing I might totally mess it up it the process. So anyway I decided to put wood hardener on it. The outcome was a louder brighter banjo. The only drawback seems to be it has a little more sustain than it had. But overall it sounds great. Please dont tell John Boulding what I did (I told him I would quit tinkering). He recently set it up and it sounded great but I just couldnt handle the black rim. Plus it gave me a chance to use the knowledge from his workshop to work on setup of my own.
