Just for fun here is a blind tone ring comparison test of some popular modern rings all installed on the same banjo. I did a similar test a while back but had to use several different banjos so this should be more accurate. The test banjo is a 1997 Gibson ESS and the rings tested (all short skirt) are presented in no particular order. Head was adjusted to about a G#, tailpiece level, Snuffy Smith bridge. Recorded using a Snowball mic on a PC using Audacity. Pick your favorite(s) and let's see who wins. I'll identify the rings once the thread has run its course.
It would be great if someone out there who owns a genuine prewar flathead with a little PC savvy could record the same song snippet (Georgia Rose) and upload it to this thread so we can use it as a benchmark. Other tone ring recordings are also welcome in the same manner and this could become a nice reference tool for fellow BHO members. Thanks.
