I'm sure this has been beat to death, but here's what I can't quite figure. Everything I've read so far about learning banjo recommends not using picks when starting out. I've tried both ways and what I don't quite understand is why you would not want to use picks even when starting out. I find that if I don't use them for a while it takes a bit to get into the swing of hitting the strings right again with them. Could be that I'm not seasoned and that switching from picks to no picks to picks again will get easier, but in my mind it just seems like not using them most of the time if you are ultimately going to use them most of the time is counterproductive to the learning process.
