I have always used a banjo strap when playing seated. The problem is that I have developed joint problems in my neck and shoulders and I think that the banjo strap exacerbates those issues. I am a large guy, and I purchased an extra long strap about six months ago. That seems to have helped, but it didn't completely fix the problem. So I am trying to transition to playing without using a strap. Usually its OK, but sometimes my instrument drifts out of position on my lap. My teacher does not use a strap. What are people's opinions about using or not using straps, and what straps to use (if any). I'd also be interested to hear about any coping strategies folks have developed for mitigating arthritis and spine issues in the neck and shoulders while picking. Thanks.
