Hello Everybody,
I'm real new to banjo playing, less then a year actually, and need some advice. Been playing a guitar for 50 plus years and made the switch last year. Now I think I was born to play a banjo and regret not switching sooner. Anyway...
I got real lucky and grabbed an opportunity to play back up behind a fiddle player in a string band that does square dances. The fiddle player keeps asking for more volume, says she can hardly hear me. At first I thought it was because I was so green I was just holding back, new player shyness and all, but now I'm thinking there might be banjo's that are louder with the same effort. We played a square dance last night and i can say I was anything but shy, the fiddler still would like more DBs. I'm using a 2nd hand Deering Goodtime right now with the strings on it that came from the factory, don't know if it's a Goodtime or Goodtime 2, it's got a back on it. I bought it used. I did a search on this website for "volume" and found some threads that mentioned the Deering Boston as a banjo that can really produce some DBs and also discovered that you can carry a new one home for $1500 or less.
So I guess what I'm asking is if there is actually a significant difference between the volume a Deering Boston makes when compared to a Deering Goodtime? I also play jam sessions and have heard that I'm not getting out from other players so it isn't just isolated to a problem playing in big rooms. Any advice appreciated. thanks, Bruce from Minnesota
