Wide frets, thin frets ... ahhhhh, just right frets

I was looking at photos on another thread where a BHO member found a great deal on a Gibson-style banjo at a pawn shop. One of the things that jumped out at me about the neck photos was the frets are really, really fat.

I had never given this much thought until recently. When I had Tom Nechville build me a banjo, he told me his standard fret is really fat, and that it makes it more playable.

Until then, I had just thought that thin frets would be more precise in playing, don't know why I thought that, but I did. So every time I had ever had a neck re-fretted in the past, I leaned towards thinner frets.

I'll have to say though, after playing on this Nechville for about two years, and when I play my top-tension which has medium frets, I have come to prefer the fatter frets overall. When I pick other banjos that have fat frets, they seem more ... playable. Tom described the playability as "plays like cutting butter" and I can't really improve on that.

No real reason to start this thread, other than to see if there is any sentiment or preference one way or the other, over fat or thin frets, or if anyone has experimented with fret gauge.
