I've got this Jida that I am learning on. I've had it for almost 30 years and just now got around to seriously working on learning and am moving along well, but as I go I am slowly fixing things that need attention. I replaced a locked up tuner when I first started, and thanks to my friends here on the BHO, just replaced the 5th string peg without a hitch and put a geared one on (life is getting better every day). Now I am thinking that this head has had tension on it for 30 years and might be due for replacement. I also think it might help the sound just a bit. I read in "Bluegrass Masters: Bill Keith" where he says that "after two to four years a head has lost all it's snap". (I probably should have asked Bill about this last week.) But I'm thinking my rig is overdue.
So I see a lot of these remo heads, new, on E-Bay and my question is: how do you measure the head? Is it the Inside Diameter of the head itself, the Outside diameter of the pot, the outside of the head hoop? Which dimension do I order to get a size that will fit my aluminum pot?
I'm thinking I will order one, make sure it fits, and then bring it to Grey Fox to get some good autographs before I put it on. I wish I had one in hand when I saw Bela back in the fall!
