I made the comment on another thread that was slightly off topic,so I thought it should be another thread.talking about the split up of that band. I thought with the stuff they were doing the split worked out better. Lester put together some hot pickers,Ingram,Haskel,Marty etc  and turned it into some good grass.I understand Earls thinking as far as trying to get his kids playing and no doubt enjoyed his time with them, but the point here is that it was poor and a waste of his talent.had it not been for people like Crowe taking up the slack with the bands he had in the early 70s banjo picking would have been at a stand still

Presto Tailpiece for Openbacks?

$

In another thread John Balch says,

I use Jaslov Prucha Presto tailpieces (old-style - non-adjustable) on almost all my banjos. I really like the sound of that tailpiece on my open-back and bluegrass instruments.

I currently have an Enoch 300 banjo that has a skin head but with the bridge more toward the center of the pot. I have been trying to zero in on the sound I want, a combination of ring and plunk, but haven't succeeded so far. There are quite a few overtones and poor note separation right now, despite various stuffings and head tensioning.  I was wondering if more downward pressure from a presto-type tailpiece might help the situation.

So, what is your opinion/experience on skinhead banjos using no-knotts versus presto-type tailpieces?Banjered

Deering Banjo Company Tour Surprise..

Excitement was definitely in the air this morning as I prepared for my trip to the Deering Banjo factory to see how these beautiful instruments are built. I was also very excited to meet up with my new Banjo friend I met here (Only on the BHO). He scheduled time off work to meet with me in Spring Valley, Ca. to take the tour and then to jam a little bit afterwards.

Now imagine my surprise when I arrived and discovered there were no tours on Mondays. I was with my 6 year old grandson who is absolutely intrigued with the banjo and was just as excited as me, if not more, to take this tour.

As we hung around the show room waiting for my new friend Ed to show up; a really nice Deering representative (Carol) walked up to us and said she had over heard me say how disappointed I was for over looking their tour schedules and this may be my last chance in who knows how long, since I was from out of state.

She so very kindly offered to give us the (nickel) tour, and I was more than welcome to play any of the banjo's in the show room while I waited for Ed. I was so thrilled! I played a few tunes on a good number of banjo's and fell in love with the beautiful Mahogany Tenbrook Legacy with it's sweet warm sound.

Ed had arrived in the mean time and was just leaving as I seen him in the parking lot on the phone calling me to inform me of the bad news that there were no tours on Mondays. I excitingly told him I could see him in the lot and to come on in, because the tour was on for us.

Carol came in with safety glasses and off we went into the factory. The staff and employees were so kind, allowing us to take photo's in certain areas, where other areas were understandingly off limit's to photographing. What an amazing day we had. I am posting a few pictures here on my page for other BHO members to see.

Thank You so much Deering Banjo Company, you made the day for us, and no doubt created yet another young banjo playing customer for the future.

Most fiddle players prefer to play this good old tune in the key of A, but Travis Brink on guitar can sing in better in G. That's no problem for our fiddle player, Earnie "Ernesto" Taft. We're playing a private party at Dallas Heritage Village last weekend. The people who hired us -- the Lone Star String Band -- were fine folks as they paid us in greenback dollars and gave us Texas-made Shiner Bock to boot. That's a good gig by any measure. Of course, that would be me on the old banjo. Can you tell that we are having fun?

New guy here!

Howdy folks! I'm a newcomer to the forum as well as the banjo. I've been playing guitar for almost 20 years and I've always had a love affair with the banjo despite never bothering to learn to play one. Well, I finally took the plunge and picked myself up a Gold Tone OB-250 about a month ago and I've been browsing the pages of this forum and it looks like a great resource and something I'd definintely like to be a part of. Glad you guys are here!

Two lizards fighting

Annie was barking at something today and I went over to her window to see what it was.  And these two lizards were fighting right there on the window screen.  It wasn't much of a fight, though.  That little one kept trying to run and the bigger one would catch it and pin it down.  Then after a while, they must of got tired of fighting because that bigger one got the little one in a half Nelson and then they were just wrestling and the little one got pinned real good.  After a few minutes the fight was over and they went their own way.

2008 Longview with Crowe 'n' 'em

Saw James King's band do a club show in Hartford CT Sunday night, and boy can that guy sing!  Barry Crabtree thumping it out on the Crowe Blackjack model with real authority.

I bought the 2008 Longview CD from James cause it had Crowe and Ronnie Stewart on it.   Crowe's picking is right on the money throughout, but Lordy when I heard his kick off to the waltz-time "The First Fall of Snow" I 'bout drove off the road.  So simple, but so "crafty".    His back up was beyond textbook for playing on slow numbers, mixing Scruggs, a bit of Stanley and thankfully some terrific CROWE licks too.  And Crowe did some FINE baritone singing.   Wow wow wow, am I glad I bought that album.

Funny to hear Crowe play on several Stanley-type numbers that the boys wanted to sing.

If you don't have this CD, GET IT!

openback purchase: vintage (fairbanks, vega) or new (lee, ramsey, etc.)

I am looking for a banjo with a whyte laydie tone ring and wondering what people think of going for a nice vintage like an imperial electric, electric or whyte laydie from fairbanks/vega vs getting a new build from someone like chuck lee (glen rose) or ramsey (electric), etc.

I am wondering if there is really a noticeable sound difference in the vintage vs the new and whether the vintage is worth it (the nice ones I see are a bit more expensive). Also, I have played some vega whyte laydies and haven't been impressed with the necks but that could just be the ones i have tried. They look great and it seems nice to have a piece of history, but the ones I played just didn't have the feel. Again, could just be the ones I tried (what Elderly generally has).

Any advice would be appreciated. If you have both, do you play the vintage more often?

Heartwood Banjo Necks

I just picked up a Heartwood Banjo Neck from a fellow BHO member.  Does anyone have any experiences with these necks.  I've seen them on ebay quite often.  I know they are made in China for the UK market from what I've read.  Just looking to see if anyone had any major problems with them.  Just putting a little inexpensive project together, for fun.

Hi All,

Is anyone else having trouble accessing Dwight Diller tabs from his website?  Everything was fine about a month ago but now it looks like the tab site is gone.   Is it only me?
