My first banjo

Anybody know how to rotate pictures on this website?

This is Streeper Banjo #1, neck is curly maple blank from Custom Inlay, with their Peghead Overlay and Fingerboard.  I did a lot of shaping on the neck and it feels very good, perhaps a tiny bit heavier than subsequent necks, but very playable.  Took it over to Stanger on Saturday and he enjoyed the action, feel and tone very much.  I think he's going to write a review.

Pruchka pot assembly, Cox resonator and Schaller tuners.

My next project is already waiting for lacquer....I enjoy the process very much, but am learning every day how little I know about banjos!

Thanks for looking!

East Virginia Blues

Hey everyone, here is "East Virginia Blues," sometimes simply called "East Virginia"... I think its a real pretty old tune, and had to give it a try... I'm in Sawmill, capo 1... also, its the first song that I have learned by ear, as I learned it from a couple of youtube videos, so I'm really pleased with that in terms of progress... I've been playing a little over a year now, and as always, I would love to hear feedback, comments, criticisms, whatever...  Hope you enjoy it!

Spillway dam bridge for a tenor banjo?

$

I put a spillway dam bridge on my GT CC-OT and am  VERY happy with it.

I now have a 70's no-name tenor, using GDAE tuning,  and am wondering if a new bridge would make an appreciable difference in the sound.  Right now the high end is a little shrill and the low end muddy.  Plus I get what I call overtones which are not pleasant to my ear on the E string and, to a lesser extent, the A string.

The generic type bridges I see on the 'net look a lot like the one (3 foot)  I already have.

I know that a new bridge may be only one of the many possible 'fixes" for my problem, but  -- has anybody had any experience with the spillway dam bridge on their tenor? Impressions?

#1 Tailpiece

A few weeks ago I was at a yard sale and Bought some large Brass House Numbers for $1.00 each. Today I saw a tailpiece style, I thought would be easy to reproduce for my Baritone Banjo Uke I am working on. The number 1, I had purchased, was just the thing to make it out of. I even incorporated the original mounting hole.

Here are some before and after pics.

I purchased One of the Eastman EBJ-Wl Whyte Layde 1903 A.C. Fairbanks copies from Bernunzio Uptown Music when they first hit the scene awhile back. So far I personally have been very content with my choice. Right now am using NY-gut strings although started out with steel.

Anyway to cut to the chase..Thought I would throw out the question to any other owners as to their experience with this instrument. Pros and cons...sorta stir the pot so to speak.

Adding variety

Rather than drift one of my other threads, I want to muse on a topic that is hanging me up. OWC said he never plays the same part the same way in a tune, and, when listening to anyone else play well, I always hear that added variety. I am still focused on increasing my competence at the basic tunes, but, once I get something down pretty tight, I find that I get hung up on how to add variations to the melody. Can anyone offer any advice as to some simple tricks to start embellishing, or some theory, or whatever else you think might help?

Yard Sale Ilda

Just stopped by a yard sale on my lunch break, saw a banjo case, stopped inquired how much for the case, the guy said $20 and hed throw in the banjo. Turns out its Ilda, ive seen them on here before and know they are Korean, from the 70s. I'm really surprised with the quality. Its a masterclone, but plays really nice for lower end banjo, seems to be quality hardware. And best of all in the case were some old national picks. Any value to these Ildas? I'm sure its worth more than $20.

Dowel Stick Brace making.

I know that  the most of the Dowel braces are made from one piece of brass cut to the proper shape, but I wanted to use some of the brass that I already have in my workshop, I have used a 15x3 mm and  15X15mm brass plates , to joint the sides I have made a 3mm  threaded rod that are fitted through the sides and center, 3 in each side, my first idea was to silver solder but I wasn't sure that the joint would be strong enough.

Went to Summertown festival Saturday and had a good time. The shade tree pickers continue to amaze. Stage show by Uncle Dave and the Ridgetop Ramblers was good as always. Also got to watch an hour and a half +- of Charlie Cushman.

Antidepressants and Jamming

Hi Folks. For a great number of reasons, including chronic pain and panic attacks, my doctor put me on Cymbalta last week. I always loved trying to be creative, and I have to wonder how this stuff may impact jamming. Has anyone here had any experience with this? All in all I feel much better, so I think this stuff is helping me a lot. I'm aware of the side effects, and I must admit the scariest side effect seems to be the withdrawal of coming off it. Mainly I am worried I might be having trouble warming up to jam. It's to early to be sure.

Thanks. cheeky

Hello, I'm learning Sandy River Belle and would love to sing along. I found a verse online but wondered if anyone knew of a clip or CD I could watch/listen to with someone singing it? So far I've only found instrumentals on Youtube.
